Steiner Ranch Elementary Stallions
PTA Volunteering vs. School Volunteering
You CANNOT volunteer at Steiner Ranch
Elementary without a photo ID badge!
Volunteering for most of us is something we love to do. It makes us
feel good about ourselves while helping those around us. However, as I
know from my first experience at Steiner Ranch Elementary, it can be a
little confusing. We are hoping to help you out by providing
information that will help you make decisions about how you’d like to
volunteer. Below and on the following pages are some short descriptions
of the various ways you can volunteer at Steiner Ranch
Elementary. If you still have questions about volunteering after
reading through this, please feel free to contact our Volunteer
Coordinator, Kim Kelly at 266-1972 or Elisabeth Richardson,
PTA President.
How do I get started?
It is LISD policy that each and every person who comes into contact
with an LISD student as a volunteer fill out Volunteer
Application and Background Check. This must be re-checked each and
every year that you volunteer in the LISD. Online
Volunteer Application You only
need to fill out one form for the whole district, so if you have
children at different schools, one form will get you approved for all
schools.
***No one will be
allowed to go on field trips unless they have been approved by district
and had a name badge made! Therefore, it is very important for everyone
to get approved before school ends in May or when school begins in
August!
What are the different types of volunteering?
You can be a school volunteer, a classroom volunteer and/or a PTA
volunteer.
What is a school volunteer?
You are a school volunteer when you volunteer at a school sponsored
event (these are listed a little later on) or when you volunteer to
help in the main office or in the library. Main office volunteers are
on a morning or afternoon rotation and can volunteer to be there every
week or every other week. Morning volunteers are there from 9:00 to
12:00 and afternoon volunteers are scheduled from 12 -2:45. Of course,
there is some flexibility with these times. You can also volunteer to
be a sub in case one of the regular volunteers can' t make it in that
day. Library volunteers have a morning and afternoon rotation as well.
The morning runs from 8:00-11:30 and the afternoon runs from
11:30-2:50. You can volunteer for a weekly schedule or work every other
week, in which case you and one other volunteer basically trade-off
each week. You can also help out by volunteering at a school-sponsored
event.
These events are:
Picture Days: There are 2
pictures days, on in the fall and one in the spring. Volunteers are
there to help comb hair, straighten clothing and help the teachers keep
the children in line. Fall picture day is Individual pictures and tends
to go quickly. Spring picture day is the day when class pictures are
also taken as well as individual pictures.
Red Ribbon Week: This school
wide event is during October. There are different events throughout the
school that are done by classroom, which the classroom moms coordinate.
A few volunteers are needed to distribute materials to teachers and
make banners. All depends on the theme. You will work closely with
Marsha Simmons, our school counselor.
Fall Cookout and Spring cookout:
Volunteers are needed to set up, serve food, grill food and clean up.
There is a runner during each shift to replenish the food for the
servers. This event is outside (weather permitting) and volunteers can
volunteer before or after their child eats. Volunteer time segments are
usually 30 minute each.
Thanksgiving lunch: The same as
the cookouts, but inside!
Breakfast with Dad (fall) /Breakfast
with Mom (spring): Need moms or dads to serve breakfast so the
other parent can eat with children
TAKS testing days: Volunteers
are needed to monitor halls during the testing and to give teachers
breaks. Volunteers cannot volunteer to monitor in their child' s hall
or relieve their child\rquote s teacher.
Committee Chair: You can
also volunteer to be a committee chair for one of the many SRE PTA
committees. If you are interested in being a committee chair, please
contact Elisabeth Richardson.
Here is a list of some of the many SRE
PTA sponsored activities:

What if I' m still just not sure what I want to do?
It's okay!! You can volunteer for a lot of things as they come up and
you can always let your child's teacher know when you will be available
if you situation changes. One of the reasons Steiner Ranch Elementary
is such a wonderful school is because of the tons of volunteers we
have. You will see parents going in and out of the school and
classrooms throughout the day. Don't be afraid to get in there and try
something new. Studies have shown over and over again that your child
benefits more than you can imagine by seeing their parent involved in
their school life. So get out there and:
VOLUNTEER!
